The exhibition dedicated to the sanctuary of Hercules at the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga

Events Culture

Sperlonga - The National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga has dedicated an important exhibition to a discovery that was made near the town. In fact, during excavation tests it was discovered that there was once a sanctuary dedicated to Hercules where the church of San Cristoforo stands today. This is not too surprising, given that the pagan figure of Hercules and the Christian figure of San Cristoforo are often linked.

One of the most interesting aspects of the discovery was also being able to go back to the dating of the sanctuary, which dates back to 312. This means that it was built together with the stretch of Via Appia that passes through it. The sanctuary, therefore, was a place where tolls were collected and at the same time salt was sold, a link between the coastal population and that of the interior. Small objects were exhibited on display, above all coins such as the silver triobol, and a cross testimony of a medieval pilgrimage from Loreto to Sperlonga. The exhibition also marked the beginning of the collaboration between the Museum and Sperlonga Turismo.
