But the beauties are not finished, rather they begin at the Cistercian Church of Santa Maria ad Cryptas, dating back to the 13th century. In Roman-Byzantine style it contains walls completely frescoed in the Middle Ages. The presbytery and the right wall were frescoed in the late 1200s with scenes from the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the burial, and with the cycle of months, depicting work in the fields. The other frescoes contained in the counter-façade concern the Last Judgment and, on the left wall, the life of the Madonna. Under a starry sky, all the finely decorated figures mark, box by box, a niche to contemplate and traces both of spirituality and of the profane human part rooted in his land.
