Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa

Culture

Pisa - Piazza dei Miracoli was defined in this way by Gabriele D'Annunzio, and it cannot be said that he has not found a more than suitable definition. In fact there are 4 buildings that are not only incredibly beautiful, but can also be defined, in some ways, 'miraculous'. The first is the imposing Cathedral, whose construction began in 1064.

The imposing work, defined as a 'white marble temple', is also made of waste materials, has a composite style and seems to want to represent the entire Mediterranean culture . Then there is the Baptistery, circular in shape, with 105 meters in diameter and a conical dome lightened by statues and Gothic tracery. Its construction began in 1152 by the architect Diotisalvi, who also took care of the bell tower. The famous cylindrical tower began to tilt almost immediately, and it was only in the nineties that it was remedied, reducing its inclination. The last building in the square is the cemetery, where earth from Monte Calvario was brought and which was heavily damaged by a bombing in 1944. The remaining frescoes, detached at the time, were repositioned over 70 years later.
