The small hamlet of Castellonorato

Culture Practical information

Castellonorato - Within the municipality of Formia there is a small hilly hamlet, which was once common in its turn and which today is a delightful village to visit. Castellonorato is located 310 meters above sea level, and has an elongated shape that makes it look like a ship stranded on the crest of the hill. It was once defended by a tower, and there was only one access door to enter.

Even today that door, of ogival shape, remains standing in its place, and allows you to enter the village which is crossed by a single street. The most interesting building is the mother church which is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. On the facade of the church you can see a beautiful majolica, which shows what was the coat of arms of Castellonorato at the time when it was still common in its own right. Walking along the main street you can see how many smaller paths branch off from it, all of which seem to be without an outlet. Their most interesting feature, however, is that of opening unexpected glimpses and panoramas.
