Montepulciano: a city rich in history

Culture

Montepulciano - Montepulciano is a town located between the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia, in the province of Siena. The city has Etruscan origins but developed mainly during the Renaissance. Entering from the imposing Porta al Prato you reach the main street full of characteristic shops. Here is one of the symbols of the town: the Colonna del Marzocco dominated by the heraldic lion of Florence.

A short distance away is the Church of Sant'Agostino with its magnificent travertine façade. Palazzo Cervini and the Chiesa del Gesù dating back to around 1600 are also worth a visit. In Piazza Grande there are two other important buildings: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Palazzo Comunale. The latter is very similar to the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence and from the top of its tower you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding countryside. The Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni, built by Antonio da Sangallo at the behest of the powerful Medici family, is instead picturesque. Not far from here you can visit the Civic Museum which exhibits numerous finds from the Etruscan and Roman times as well as works by world-famous artists such as Signorelli, Carracci, Della Robbia and Caravaggio. Finally, a product of excellence is the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano which can be tasted in the historic cellars of the town.
