From the ancient history, although little documented, it knew the Roman, Pisan and Aragonese dominations. The archaeological park located near the millenary church of Santa Caterina is fascinating in this sense. The happy geographical position has made Elmas one of the most ancient Sardinian inhabited places. Also in Elmas the battle was fought which saw Prince Alfonso of Aragon opposing the Pisans who in fact decreed the beginning of the Aragonese domination in Sardinia. The church of San Sebastiano is interesting, with its imposing bronze door and the interior with cross vaults combined with the many sculpted architectural elements. Elmas was born as a land of farmers and fishermen, origins that are still alive today in the cultural identity of the city.
