The legends and fantastic characters of Petilia Policastro

Folklore and traditions

Petilia Policastro - In Petilia Policastro there are some places that are linked to legends that the locals have handed down over time. Below the village, just outside the Judeca gate, where brigands once used to pass, there is an old farmhouse. A little further on there is a spring, which is called fairy water. This denomination derives from the fact that, until a couple of generations ago, people heard sounds when they approached the source.

The noise was that of a moving loom, and it was widely believed that the fairies were weaving. But it's not just the fairies that populate the suburbs of Petilia Policastro. There are also two very particular rocks, respectively called Timpa della Serpa and Pietra del Tuono. Another very suggestive place are the Cerratullo caves, better known as the angel's caves. In fact, inside them there is a rock in which the shapes of an angelic creature would be recognized. All these places and these symbologies would be connected to each other, to indicate more than human beings, but not strictly angelic.
