The presence of Vesuvius, essential but dangerous for the coast

Vesuvio - There is a saying that claims that you cannot think of Naples without Vesuvius, and in fact it is. Despite the numerous eruptions, often devastating, people are always returning to live under the volcano and along its shoreline. Yet there are many reasons not to trust this sleeping giant too much. One of the leading scholars of eruptions related to Vesuvius is called Giovanni Ricciardi, who managed to discover many curious things, often previously unknown.

For example, in a biography of San Gennaro he discovered that he became protector of Naples from eruptions following an event that occurred in 685 d. C. the volcano erupted and people took refuge in the catacombs to pray to the saint. The lava flow stopped and since then San Gennaro has also been revered in relation to such occurrences. Having also discovered eruptions of which nothing was previously known, Ricciardi deduced that a new event could be near. The last two eruptions date back to 1906 and 1944, during the Second World War, when there were 26 deaths and thousands of displaced. There was a great deal of urbanization afterwards, making any upcoming eruption even more dangerous.
