Chioggia, prestige of everyday life

Nature Culture Folklore and traditions Practical information Curiosities

Chioggia - Chioggia is a town of over 48,000 inhabitants in the province of Venice located at the southern end of the lagoon of the same name, on the tip facing the Pellestrina coast, from which it is divided by its Bocca di Porto, approximately 37 km from the capital. Its historic center is located entirely on an artificial island, separated from the mainland by the Canale della Cava, dug in 1500 for defensive reasons, while the most recent part, Sottomarina, a long and sandy coast that has become a renowned tourist center is located on the edge of mainland that separates the lagoon from the sea, to its right.

Among alleys, canals, bridges and eighteenth-century palaces it seems to immerse yourself in the Venetian, but the purest and most ancient, the Chioggia one, that is, not touristy and an end in itself, but true, alive. Chioggia is a city where people work, where the peculiar trades of the place such as fishing, horticulture and port activities overlap the aesthetic and historical patina of the place without covering it, indeed perhaps enhancing it and merging it with reality. In parallel to the everyday activities there is the tourism industry, committed every day to meet the needs of those who arrive on site in search of beaches, sea, sun, art, landscapes, popular traditions, cuisine, handicrafts and nightlife, all elements available on site in an unrepeatable mix. The artistic heritage of the city is concentrated on Corso del Popolo, the main square with an elongated shape, almost a street, on which Chioggia develops and from which the 74 streets of the ancient village start in a herringbone pattern. In parallel, a short distance away, the Canal Vena develops which, ridden by nine bridges, allows fishing boats to arrive and depart from the heart of the center, while on the right the San Domenico canal is at the service of merchant activities. Among the architectural treasures it is worth mentioning the Renaissance-style Tower of Santa Maria and southern gate of the city and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Basilica of San Giacomo and the Church of San Domenico, all alternated by the presence of residential buildings of fishermen in gray stone, to continually reconnect the knots of history with real life in an indissoluble binomial.
