The Balangero Castle

Culture

Balangero - Our trip to Balangero starts from the parish church of San Giacomo Apostolo. We leave the church to immerse ourselves in nature and shortly after we find ourselves in front of the remains of a 10th century castle described in the book 'Religious and civil history of Cafasse' by Giuseppe Fornelli in 1972. In his book, Fornelli, he talks about the ancient 4 towers that surrounded the castle; each equipped with underground and pugnacious.

Around the walls a moat, complete with a levator bridge, was fed by an artificial lake on the sides of the San Vittore and Bongiovetto mountains. The feudal lords of the castle stayed in a double building where at the bottom was the palace with kitchens, granaries, chapel, oven etc; at the top, on the other hand, through an uncovered flight of steps, one arrived at the palace lodgings. Between 1200 and 1300 the castle was the center of numerous wars which led to several reconstructions. The most important war event was the one that involved Prince Giacomo Acaia and Amedeo VI of Savoy who besieged the castle. The story ended on 21 January 1357 with peace. Today, among the vegetation, some of the underground entrances and what looks like an ancient bridge are still visible.
