Nature Culture Practical information

Siracusa - Syracuse is one of the most important cities on the Ionian coast of Sicily. The city has an immense artistic and cultural heritage and is divided into two areas, the old part of the city called Ortigia and the new part. The tour that is proposed to us in the video begins in the new city where we are proposed to admire the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, which contains part of the classical monuments of Greek and Roman civilization.

The park of Neapolis considered one of the most important archaeological areas in Sicily as well as one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The most spectacular part of this place is undoubtedly the Amphitheater which is third in Italy after the Colosseum and the Arena of Verona. Once the visit of the park is completed, we arrive at the historic center of the city, which takes the name of Ortigia. The name indicates the term 'rock', this square patch of land where the oldest part of the city stands. The best way to visit the city is to leave the car near the Darsena and continue on foot starting the tour from the Temple of Apollo, one of the first built by the Greeks in Syracuse. The visit to Ortigia can start from Porto Marina near the Vittorio Emanuele seafront and then continue through narrow streets and characteristic alleys full of typical local places. It is possible to admire the Aretusa spring, a millenary source of fresh water contained in a circular basin that overlooks the Castle of Maniace. The highlight of Ortigia is Piazza Duomo where a majestic Baroque scenery opens up that leaves you truly enchanted. In the same stands the Cathedral, preceded by a staircase with the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul next to it. Inside it is possible to admire the marvel of Byzantine art. Returning to the seafront, through via della maestraenza it is possible to admire the countless palaces that surround the Church of the Immaculate Conception, in the Jewish quarter up to the center of the city, Piazza Archimede where the fountain of Arethusa with the Goddess dominates and surrounded by sirens and handmaids. The last part of the tour is dedicated to the districts of the ancient market, near the small port.
