Vedrette di Ries National Park

Nature

Valle Aurina - The Vedrette di Ries National Park on the north-eastern border of Alto-Adige, has a wild and unspoiled nature, together with other natural parks it represents the largest complex of protected areas in Central Europe. The peak of the Three Lords is the symbol of the protection of nature that extends beyond national borders. In winter the Malga dei Tauri remains closed, the shepherds retreat to the valley floor.

Here, once upon a time, the surfaces were covered with ice all year round, which now melts due to climate change in the warm seasons. In fact, water and ice have always changed the Alpine landscape, but the most significant changes occurred during the ice ages. In the troughs the water of the thaw collects forming crystalline lakes; marshes, on the other hand, like those on mallows, are now rare. From the numerous lakes and marshes, the water begins its course towards the valley in small streams that swell, transforming into streams and on the cliffs become impetuous waterfalls, such as the Riva waterfalls at Campo Tures which constitute an impressive spectacle. Near Perca the water has forged the landscape by digging the moraine slope and creating 'the wood of earth pyramids'. In the park you can collect stones of different origins and eras.
