Short visit to Sperlonga

Practical information Curiosities

Sperlonga - Sperlonga stands on a rocky spur of Monte Magno, and takes its name from the fact that here there are many natural caves called caverns. These caves were well known since ancient times, so much so that the Roman emperor Tiberius wanted to build his villa inside one of them, now called 'Tiberius's cave'. When the road was under construction, numerous objects were unearthed and today are exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum.

Sperlonga was born as a fishing village, who tried to defend themselves from invasions from the sea by erecting four towers still visible today. One is now incorporated into the mess; the other three are Torre Truglia, Torre del Nibbio and Torre di Capovento. Unfortunately this did not prevent Sperlonga from being razed to the ground in 1534. Today the small village welcomes the visitor with its typically Mediterranean aspect, with lanes and streets that lead to the sea. This is still the most uncontaminated sea of the whole Lazio coast, a real naturalistic heritage.
