Acquafredda and the Maiella National Park

Acquafredda di Roccamorice - Roccamorice is a municipality located in the Maiella National Park, which has been defined by UNESCO as a Geopark. This is because inside there is a great biodiversity, and also because there are not only naturalistic beauties, but also artistic and cultural ones. The tourist offer of municipalities such as Roccamorice, however, focuses above all on hiking trails, which are managed by a group of young people who enthusiastically collaborate with the Park Authority.

One of the most interesting places in the municipal area is called Acquafredda, a plateau 3 or 4 kilometers from the town. It can be reached via an asphalted road, and then a path that can be easily traveled even by those who are not too familiar with the mountains. At Acquafredda, at the end of the Second World War, there was a prison camp used by Italian soldiers. However, previously it was a mining site that wanted to be exploited for the production of bitumen. In this place, industrial archeology, history, and of course nature are stratified.
