The palio of the donkeys.

Campagnatico. - In the first days of September and for over 70 years, one of the most characteristic Tuscan palios has been running. The competition of the four districts of Castello, Centro, Pieve and Santa Maria actually dates back to 1400, running bareback and with two female donkeys per district. The race starts on Sunday at 18.00 and is the culmination of traditions relived from the previous Wednesday.

Contrada propitiatory dinners, bands and food stands of local products accompany the ritual much felt by the inhabitants. On Sunday morning, the offering of the Cero takes place when the sacred is intertwined with the profane, an evangelical connotation that has stemmed the irrepressible and popular euphoria of the districts for centuries. It is an opportunity not to be missed to let your heart warm by passion and a healthy rivalry, taste specialties such as salami, pecorino cheese, extra virgin olive oil and wines, visit the walls and the Rocca degli Aldobrandeschi of the eleventh century. Due to their rusticity and the care with which they are trained, the donkeys run the palio without 'running' the risk of accidents, unfortunately seen in the other Tuscan palios where thoroughbreds are ridden.
