The suggestive area of the Mills near Nosate

Curiosities

Nosate e Turbigo - In the area between the municipalities of Nosate, Turbigo and Padregnano there are many canals, which are artificial canals. Here, however, the canals are called molinare, as the area was once full of mills. The reason is quickly explained. Here there is an abundance of water, water that also flows impetuously, generating the mechanical energy necessary to give life to the mills in which cereals, especially wheat, were ground to make flour.

The mills were built since the early Middle Ages, but what can still be seen today is the so-called mill at the bridge, or new mill. The mill at the bridge is located between Nosate and Turbigo and originated in 1179, when the excavation of the Ticinello separated the pre-existing structure in two. In fact, at the end of the 15th century in the area there were two mills, the new and the old. The new was also said to the bridge because of the Castano bridge which is nearby. This structure was originally built in wood and then rebuilt in stone. The new mill, which had 4 wheels, was also made of wood, but in 1771 it was rebuilt in masonry.
