Folklore and traditions

Gubbio - The most important day of the year in Gubbio is the one in which the Festa dei Ceri is celebrated. The celebrations, aimed at remembering Sant'Ubaldo, patron saint of the city, begin very early in the morning, when the drummers already from 5:00 in the morning go through the streets of the center to wake everyone up. Afterwards mass is held, and then in the afternoon the ritual of placing the saints on the so-called certain is performed. The candles are tall machines that are carried in a running procession. On their top there are the statues of three saints: Sant'Ubaldo, of course, and then San Giorgio and Sant'Antonio Abate. San Giorgio represented merchants and artisans, while Sant'Antonio Abate, protector of animals, peasants. In this way, each different soul of the Gubbio participates in the race.
