An enchanting village in Sabina

Culture Folklore and traditions Practical information

Torricella in Sabina - We are in the province of Rieti, in a vast territory rich in history and traditions on the appendages of the Sabine mountains. Today we go to the discovery of Torricella; the beauty of this village has its roots in the past and in particular in the Middle Ages; all the towns of Sabina were in fact, around the year 1000, encased, that is, fortified in raised places and all under the dominion of some local lords.

Torricella is the capital of the medieval conformation and we note how the urban organization is clearly visible: the town in fact develops along the main street, on a slight slope, and is flanked by two uninterrupted rows of houses that begin close to the ancient Palazzo Franceschi , now the town hall. We continue the walk in via Roma, short but suggestive, among ancient sculpted palaces and fountains that recall the goodness of the waters present in this territory. We then come to the gateway to the old village, the 'Pescheria', where a remnant of the Brancaleone castle stands, the tower, which had a military function of protection from the barbarian invasions. Today it is part of the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, inside which you can admire different frescoes and fragments of medieval paintings. Before setting off towards the other villages of Sabina, we visit the Church of San Lorenzo and the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie; during the works carried out on the latter, interesting frescoes were found, hitherto hidden by overlapping plasters and paintings.
