The wind through the gates of the Castle.

Castello e viuzze - The Castle is of Norman foundation who established their dominion in Calabria, after defeating the Byzantines, in the second half of the 11th century. Local stones were used, instead of bricks or wood, of different facets and matrix so that the appearance of the quadrangular tower, the first nucleus, is lightened and warm. Ruggero d'Altavilla gave the garrison to the landless Castellanum which had the role of preserving the defense and control of the territory.

Over the centuries the castle was enlarged passing under the Aragonese dominion of Federico, the future king of Naples. The alliance with the Pope, in 1494, sanctioned the marriage between the two families and the castle was ceded by contract to the Borgia family. The coats of arms of the feudal lords are displayed in the internal room occupying the entire wall with lions, hunting horns, keys and other symbols of strength. In the display cases two skeletons show the injuries and the general health conditions of those who lived for the defense of the castle. Under the foundations a necropolis of late antique age, VI-VIII century, was found, with jewels and the remains of the funeral banquet, a pagan rite later prohibited by Catholicism. The walk through the streets of the town between shop windows with the famous ceramics and a short visit to the Church of San Giorgio, gives goodbye for another day to the panorama of the Gulf.
