Procida, the city of colors

Procida - The colors of the rainbow mix to give life to Procida, a town in the metropolitan city of Naples in Campania. The perimeter of the island, about 16 km, includes not only the entire city but also the nearby islet of Vivara. Its jagged coasts have given birth to wonderful beaches and to three famous and particular harbors. The city of Procida is divided into two large and characteristic villages, each with its own history and peculiarity.

In the center of the island is Terra Murata and the Palazzo D'Avalos. This village takes its name from the walls built in the Middle Ages to protect the inhabitants from sea attacks. The D'Avalos Palace has become famous for being the stately home of the Avalos who ruled the island until the eighteenth century. Only later did the palace become a prison and then a barracks with an attached prison. The Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo was built in the year 1000 and still preserves intact the catacombs inside with the bodies of the wealthy of the island and the priests who followed one another over the years. Overlooking the sea, Marina Coricella is the oldest fishing village on the island and represents the soul of the city; characterized by the colorful houses of the fishermen and the arches of Arab origin that are interspersed between a balcony and another. The Marine Protected Area was established in 2007 to protect the landscape and the marine environment. The Kingdom of Neptune consortium, in addition to protecting the area, also takes care of organizing guided activities aimed at discovering the seabed, in the name of respect for the inhabitants of the sea and the discovery through diving and excursions of the archaeological finds scattered on the seabed off the coast of Procida.
