Melilli

Melilli - Overlooking the Sicilian coast is Melilli a village in the province of Syracuse. The particularity of Melilli consists in being a town steeped in history, so much so that it is unique in its kind. The seat of the library is emblematic; equipped with an entrance decorated with a stylized masonry arch with an ancient rose window below, the windows are decorated with masonry structures.

The interior has frescoed ceilings and paintings depicting the most important cities in Italy. One of the places of worship of historical importance is the church of Sant'Antonio, whose facade is adorned with rose windows; next to it stands the bell tower with a clock at the top. The church of the Holy Spirit has a facade adorned with coats of arms and curvilinear decorations, the interior has frescoed ceilings and vaults. Characteristic is the church of San Nicola which houses an important painting depicting the creation. The town's economy is mainly agricultural and is mainly based on olive groves. Melilli is an area rich in quarries: the so-called 'Pirrere', places where in the past the white stone was extracted and used for architectural purposes or for sculptures. With its 26 meters of height extends the oldest quarry, dug in 1400 on the climite mountains; where still today the writings of the 'pyrriators' can be found along the corridors who, with a pickaxe, had the task of recovering parts of the stone. Of great importance is the museum of the city which collects within it animal and plant species of considerable importance. The church of San Sebastiano is the main place of worship in the city. The façade has a niche in the center consisting of three arches that house the bells, on the central door the saint to whom the church is dedicated is depicted while on the top right next to the central cross there are spiers. The neoclassical interior is decorated with frescoes and paintings.
