Bolognola: a small village nestled in the mountains between unspoiled nature and medieval art

Bolognola - Bolognola is a town in the province of Macerata located in the Sibillini National Park, called the highest in the Marche region because it is over 1000 meters above sea level. The town is crossed by the Fiastrone river, which rises right here, and Monterotondo is the highest peak in the place. The place finds a strong source of livelihood in tourism.

It is mainly linked to the landscape which attracts nature and trekking enthusiasts in summer, and ski lovers in winter. The excursions are different and very suggestive. These include: - the Fargno fork, a panoramic point between Monte Rotondo and Pizzo Tre Vescovi; - the Acquasanta waterfall, of natural origin, which can be reached in an hour and a half walk from the town and which is set between Monte Bambucerta and Monte Rotondo; - the source of L'Aquila, on the slopes of Monte Sassotetto and reachable only on foot, which testifies to the ancient presence of the bird of prey; - and the Grotta dell'Orso. The birth of the town is linked to a legend that would have it been founded in the Middle Ages, by three exiled Bolognese nobles belonging to three families who then gave their names to the three inhabited areas of the place: Villa Malvezzi, Villa Pepoli and Villa Bentivoglio. The name is in fact linked to the lost homeland, Bologna, and would indicate a 'little Bologna'. The artistic importance is to be found in the presence of many churches and convents, and in two painters born here who were important in the Marche Renaissance: Giovanni Angelo d'Antonio, and Ansovino Vanni. The town was also the birthplace of an important composer, Filippo Marchetti, to whom a permanent exhibition at Palazzo Maurizi is dedicated.
