It was also an important sacred center in Roman times, there was in fact a temple dedicated to the goddess Fortuna. There are also many archaeological remains of the time and also the many buildings dating back to the medieval and Renaissance periods. But Fano is also and above all famous for its carnival, one of the oldest in Italy. It is also called 'the sweetest carnival in Italy' because of the traditional parade where several tons of chocolate are thrown from the carnival floats on the crowd that gathers them. The tradition is propitiatory as it takes up the gesture of the peasants who at the end of winter sow for the new season. The event is very popular, attracts many citizens and visitors every year, with allegorical floats, traditional masks and lots of fun. It is an event also known abroad, so much so that there are many twinnings with other typical carnivals in the world. That of Cuba, for example, with which there have been exchanges and dispatches of delegations between Fano and Havana.
