The legends surrounding Lake Trasimeno

Folklore and traditions

Lago Trasimeno - Lake Trasimeno is the largest in central Italy; it is located in Umbria, in an area that has been inhabited since the most remote antiquity. Perhaps for this reason the lake is surrounded by very suggestive stories and legends. The first concerns the genesis of its name. It seems that once there was a beautiful prince named Trasimeno.

He arrived at the lake, while he was traveling, and decided to take a bath. Its beauty was noticed by a nymph named Clay. The nymph used her magic to bring the prince closer to her, who was in the center of the lake. Unfortunately, however, the young man drowned, and it was not even possible to find his body. The lake took its name, and today the breeze still carries the lament of the unfortunate nymph. Another legend concerns a typical dessert of this area, the torciglione. It seems that one day the nuns who resided on the Maggiore Island received a surprise visit from certain senior prelates. But they didn't have fish in the pantry, so they used the ingredients they had to make an eel-shaped cake. This is how the torciglione was born.
