The beauties of Montieri

Nature Culture Curiosities

Montieri - Montieri is a valuable village on the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills, surrounded by a verdant flora of oak and beech woods. The history of Montieri is marked by a vital Middle Ages, where the town lives within the disputes between Volterra and Siena for the control of its metal deposits (it is no coincidence that the name of the town derives from the Latin 'mons aeris', mountain of copper).

It is precisely the remains of the local copper mine that are one of the most evocative points of the place: the point identified as "le Roste" is characterized by excavated ground and a very evident reddish color, of sure impact. The medieval village is characterized by a brick and stone profile with a medieval flavor. Here we find the most interesting historical buildings, such as the Cassero Senese (built even in 1216), the two tower-houses (Torre Narducci and Torre Biageschi) and the large historic Renaissance residence that responds to the name of Palazzo Papi Mattii. Since Montieri is home to part of the Cornate and Fosini Natural Park, it is not surprising that you can take splendid walks in the countryside, perhaps having the "fairy hole" as a destination. This is in fact the entrance to an ancient silver mine, immersed in a frame of rock and vegetation.
