Nature Culture

Alcamo - Alcamo is a large Sicilian town in the province of Trapani; rises to 256 meters and has 45,000 inhabitants. Alcamo is a place rich in culture, history and art. The symbolic monument is certainly the castle of the Counts of Modica, built in 1350, today it is the seat of the puppet opera and wine museums. Very interesting is the Church of San Tommaso, built in the fifteenth century with a splendid portal in Gothic-Catalan style.

Equally remarkable is the Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano, of the XVIII century, with a hexagonal plan, inside it boasts two stucco statues by Serpotta. The square of the same name, the beating heart of the city, is dedicated to his most illustrious son, the thirteenth-century poet Ciullo d'Alcamo; on it insists the Jesuit College with a beautiful loggia of the eighteenth century. The highest expression of the Baroque style in Alcamo is reached in the Church of San Paolo and San Bartolomeo. Fascinating, although semi-ruined, the castle of Calatubo stands on a cliff outside the center, built by the Arabs in the 10th-11th century and boasts a wonderful view over western Sicily. Last mention for the natural reserve of Monte Bonifato, where there are signs of ancient settlements; unmissable occasion for lovers of excursions, walks and nature.
