The tree of abundance and other beauties in Massa Marittima.

Massa marittima - The mosaic of the tree with women who, with long sticks, collect the golden fruits welcomes us to the village. The elegant and harmonious structure of the Cathedral suggests the splendor of ancient times, when the nearby silver mines provided wealth to the Bishops and Lords of this land. Built starting from 1100, Giovanni Pisano renovated it at the end of 1200, lengthening the plan and raising the facade.

Inside you can admire important works of art, such as the Majesty by Da Buoninsegna, a fresco by Lorenzetti and a monumental and decorated baptismal font from the 13th century. The apse houses the ark of San Cerbone dated 1324 and sculpted by Goro di Gregorio. Returning to the square, the three buildings that make up the Palazzo Pubblico that belonged to the Counts of Biserno are worth a visit. One of these is the Torre dei Palazzi, known for having hosted the Bishop, who fled from the castle on the date of the proclamation of the free Municipality. We go up to the new city, built by the Sienese conquistadors in a network of orthogonal streets, passing under the great arch and visiting the fortress with the Church of San Pietro all'orto and Sant'Agostino which preserves a large cloister.
