The underwater caves of the Zingaro Reserve

Riserva dello Zingaro - The Riserva dello Zingaro was established in Sicily in 1981 to defend the area from building speculations. Since then, many tourist routes have been opened and, just when it was believed that there was nothing more to discover, divers have instead found wonders unknown until then. Far below the most used paths and paths, caves have been found, an entire system of caves full of secrets to be explored.

These caves, which can only be reached by sea, are in fact very ancient. They date back to around 200 million years ago, and are thought to be among the oldest on the island. This means that they can reveal many things about the formation processes of the island itself, especially through the study of the rocks and their geological conformation. When divers go from cave to cave they sometimes see their vision blur. The phenomenon is due to the meeting point between fresh and salt water. In these caves we rediscover the delicate balance that makes life on Earth possible.
