The historic abbey of Montecassino

Montecassino - In Cassino there is the abbey of Montecassino, famous not only for religious reasons. The primitive nucleus of the monastery dates back to the 6th century AD, when San Benedetto found an ancient pagan temple here and decided to use the structure to build a cloister dedicated to San Martino di Tours. What today looks like a path, a path, is actually what remains of the base of that cloister.

Once you pass the entrance door that led to the monastery in the seventeenth century, you can see another find from the Roman era. It is a turret, dating back to the 2nd century BC, in which St. Benedict made his cell. Over time, that place has become the site of pilgrimages and prayers. Another interesting site of the abbey is the so-called rock of miracles, where many civilians found refuge who were saved from the terrible bombings in 1944 that largely destroyed this religious site. Later it was rebuilt very faithfully, also using recycled materials.
