The study of the blue whale in the Pelagie islands

isole Pelagie - The Tethys Institute is a research institute based in Milan that studies the marine environment in Italy. For this reason, some researchers have decided to start a project in the Pelagie Islands, which is mainly interested in a large aquatic animal that is the blue whale. Thanks to the collaboration of various local authorities, first of which the Protected Marine Area of the Pelagie, an attempt was made to bring some specimens closer and then mark them, in order to follow their movements and better understand their habits.

The blue whales mainly approach the island of Lampedusa between February and March to feed. Here they find abundant plankton, one of their main foods. It is not unusual to see two or more of them come to the surface to eat. The Pelagie Islands are on the other hand famous for their biodiversity, as many different species of marine animals live here, such as sharks or turtles. Underlining this aspect also means enhancing the territory.
