Little Jerusalem

Pitigliano - The village is perched on a tuff promontory where there have been settlements since the late Bronze Age. Civilized by the Etruscan ethnic group, the houses carved into the rock have gradually acquired structural improvements. Legend has it that Pitiglio and Cisano took refuge here after stealing the golden crown of Jupiter from the Capitol, founding the city.

The monumental aqueduct dates back to the Medici period, when the delegate Orsini took over the government of the city in 1545. The Renaissance connotation is affirmed in the homonymous palace, built around a pre-existing convent from the year 1000, with the elegant well that adorns the court. The structure of the historic center is divided into ups and downs, ladders, steep alleys, arches and vaults that make it labyrinthine but illuminated, with the light color of the tufaceous stones. Very particular is the ancient Jewish quarter which has always been integrated into the community. You can visit the sixteenth-century Synagogue, with the candelabra, the lamps and the biblical inscriptions and the ancient dyeing plants, obtained in the secret tuff caves.
