The rock caves of Zungri

Zungri - A few kilometers from the coast and the coast of the gods, you can visit the rock settlement. A territory inhabited already in primitive times due to the presence of natural cavities, it was civilized starting from Magna Graecia until the Roman era and the sixth century, when the cave civilization became more evolved and communal. The settlement has 50 well-preserved caves immersed in the natural, wooded and rocky environment.

Articulated rooms with vaulted, interlocking or niche openings create a play of shadows and lights inside, giving movement to the square shapes. Stairs carved into the rock are sometimes covered in wood to testify the human presence up to the 1600s. 'Limestone' and domed granaries have been expertly carved into the cavities, to serve community needs. Turning attention to the opposite promontory, you can still see the squares of the ancient agricultural plots, the main livelihood of the Sbariati. Monte Poro can be reached by trekking from the coast, in particular from Capo Vaticano, through a sea-mountain path with a view of the Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina and the plain of Gioia Tauro.
