In search of Alaric's burial
Curiosities
Mendicino e Carolei - Between Mendicino and Carolei there is a very suggestive place, a deep valley encased by high rocks at the bottom of which the Busento river rises. Here, after climbing for a while along the rocky ridge, it is possible to notice two openings, two caves that are often the destination of onlookers and even treasure hunters. According to tradition, in fact, the tomb of the barbarian king Alaric could be hidden here, together with his wealth. (continues below the video)
No one has ever thought of seriously delving into the matter, but going up to the caves, which are a few tens of meters away from each other, you can see how the area has been frequented often and willingly. There is an ancient altar, but also more recent signs of the grave robbers. A hermit also lived here for a while. To corroborate the thesis according to which Alaric was buried in these caves there is a large cross engraved in the rocky wall opposite. Finding the tomb of Alaric would be a great archaeological event, which would rewrite history. But it would also mean unearthing his treasure: 25 tons of gold and 150 tons of silver.
