Lake Carezza, the rainbow lake

Nature

Lago di Carezza - One of the most interesting naturalistic gems that can be visited in the Dolomites is the area of Lake Carezza. Known as Karer See in German, it is an alpine water basin located about 1520 meters above sea level, within the municipality of Nova Levante. The most striking thing about Lake Carezza is the juxtaposition of the crystalline water with the surrounding mountain setting.

The stretch of water is in fact set among rich fir forests, while not far away you can see the spiers of the Latemar. Any visit must also take into account seasonality, as the profile of the Lech dl Ergobando (this is the Ladin name of the lake) changes according to the time of year; it is necessary to take into account the rains, the thaw and that the tributaries of the lake are underground. From this we understand why the Karer See manifests itself with its maximum capacity in the hottest months, from May until the end of summer; in winter its surface is frozen and covered with a layer of snow. The Ladin name suggests the Italian nickname of the lake: Ergobando means 'rainbow'. This denomination has a double origin: the first, more pragmatic, is due to the range of colors found in the lake, while the second derives from a folk legend relating to a sorcerer and the nymph Ondina.
